Charlemont, County Armagh

Origin

Background

On border with Tyrone, 8.5km SE of Dungannon

par: Loughgall bar: Armagh

Charlemont takes its name from Charles Blount, 8th baron Mountjoy (commonly called ‘Lord Mountjoy’), Lord Deputy of Ireland and later Earl of Devonshire, for whom Sir Toby Caulfield erected a fort here in 1602 (see Castlecaulfield). The name Charlemont is a combination of Charles and the mount- element of Mountjoy. Sir Toby Caulfield, who died in 1627, became the first Lord Charlemont. Charlemont is in the townland of BOROUGH OF CHARLEMONT, the original Ir. name of which was Achadh an Dá Chora [aghoo an da khora] ‘field of the two weirs’, the latter having presumably been on the river Blackwater. Charlemont is twin village to Moy which lies opposite it on the west bank of the river, in Co. Tyrone[Achadh in Charad c.1645].
