Eagralougher, County Armagh

Origin

of uncertain origin

Background

The qualifying element in this place-name probably derives from the Irish element luchair. The same anglicised form -lougher can also be seen in the common place-name Ardlougher which is derived from the Irish form Ard Luachra ‘height of the rush-land’ which is the name of eight Irish townlands (logainm.ie). The element luchair ‘rush-land’ is also anglicised in the same way in Ballynalougher (Baile na Luachra ‘townland of the rush-land) in Co. Antrim.

For the initial element, the first NIPNP proposal is the trisyllabic element aichearra ‘short-cut’, although there is no evidence of such a long form in the historical forms. The second NIPNP proposal for this first element eochair ‘edge or border’ might refer to the fact that the boundary of this townland is marked by the Callan River and this same river might have marked the boundary of the rushes.

Following the appearance of baile in the 1639 form Ballyagrelogher 1 balliboe, we might also consider the element acar/acra ‘acre’ in a form such as Baile Acar Luachra ‘townland of the acre of rush-land’, or the similar element achar ‘extent of space’ in a form like as Baile Achar Luachra ‘townland of the space of rush-land’.
