Mullaghbrack, County Armagh

Origin

Ir. An Mullach Breac ‘the speckled summit’

Background

The name of this townland is also the name of the parish. The second version of Archbishop Dowdall’s list (1544) gives as a parish the tribal name Clanconche.  However the first version includes as a parish name Mullaicbracc, “speckled summit”, in Irish (An) Mullach Breac, the name of the current townland which contained a church in the east of the district of Clanconchy. Mullaghbrack became an established parish name in later sources. Indeed, the townland of Mullaghbrack contains a modern church & graveyard which occupies a medieval, possibly earlier site of ecclesiastical significance (NISMR).
