Placenamesni.orgthe history behind our place-names

Blaris, County Down

Origin

Ir. Bláras ‘a field’

Background

The townland of Blaris, which contains the site of the medieval parish church of that name, lies on the south side of the river Lagan, adjacent to the town of Lisburn. In the Papal Taxation of 1306 the name of the church is recorded as Ecclesia de Blaris. Writing in the middle of the 19th century William Reeves remarked that while the graveyard survived very little of the church was still intact at that date (EA 46-7). In 1605 the name of the townland of Blaris is recorded as Ballytempleblarisse, i.e. Baile Teampall Blárais ‘the townland of the church of Blaris’.  A portion of the parish of Blaris (including the town of Lisburn) lies west of the Lagan, in Co. Antrim.
