Edenticullo, County Down

Ir. Éadan Tí Cú Uladh ‘hillbrow of Cú Uladh’s house’

Edenticullo lies to the east of Large Park, with an extending arm to the NW which indicates that the north-east of Large Park was once contained within it.  There is a hill in the south of the townland.  In the early 17th century this townland was the address of the Kilwarlin chieftain, Brian Oge McRory Magennis of Edenticollowe (1632, 1610).  The spelling -cullo, often -collowe in the 17th century, indicates the Irish personal name Cú Uladh ‘hound of Ulster’ rather than simply CollaCú Uladh formerly had a genitive Con Uladh, as in the surname MacAnullo, McNally from Mac Con Uladh, but this was not always used.
