Ballynagowan, County Armagh
Origin
Ir. Seanbhaile na nGabhann ‘old settlement/holding of the smiths’
Background
Ballynagowan appearsas Shanavilligorune in the correct place on the 1609 map, on the west bankof the Bann, to the north of Garvaghy and south of Derryhanvil and Corbracky (Escheated Co. map 29). The prefix sean- ‘old’ was used again when Shanvallinegon was granted to William Powell in 1610 (CPR Jas I 165a), and later belonged to Anthony Cope (Inq. Ult. Arm. $12 Car. II, 1661). In this inquisition document Derrycory, now a separate townland to the north of Derryhanvil beside the river, was said to be part of both Shanevallynegowne and Carrowracoge, Corbracky.
From 1614 to 1661 the name Ballynagowan clearly referred to a largish area with different divisions, as in 1614 Ballygoenewtra (uachtarach ‘upper’) belonged to the Archbishop of Armagh (CPR Jas I), and in1633 (Inq. Ult. Arm.) his possessions are detailed as: ‘Creenespinee al Magherintemple& Ballyneegowne-outragh 2 b'bos near the church of Drumcree conteyning these prcells: Derrylaghan, Aghacattie, Carrickenebolghie, Cloneneesawle, Clone-Iteean, Tawnaghmackillin & Leggaganiffe’. Cen 1659 lists both Ballynagone and Ballynagone otra. According to BSD (1661) Ballygowenotera belonged to the archbishop and Ballygowen Itra was held by Alse Pybus (Ffarrell, McDeele and McCann paid hearth money here in 1664): maybe the 'old' part of the townland was to the north of these. However, a will of 1718 refers simply to Bellanagown, though the Ordnance Survey Name Book OSNB mentions that part was still primate land.
