Corcreeny, County Down

Ir. Corr Chríonaigh ‘hill of the dry branches’

The first part of the name Corcreeny is probably corr ‘a round hill’, possibly followed by críonach ‘faggots’, which can be either masculine or feminine, derived from the adjective críon ‘withered, decayed’. Historical spellings of the name vary little, with an e or ee in the second syllable in all except the earliest, although the current local pronunciation is -e- rather than -ee-.  The vowel makes it unlikely that the second element is the tribal name Cruthin or Cruithne, as one would expect early spellings to give u.  Place-names like Duncroon, Co. Derry, (Dún Cruithne) and Crown Mound, Newry, (Áth Cruithne, PNI i 43) commemorate the border between this people, who are not to be confused with the Scottish Picts, and other tribes.  Uí Echach were Cruthin in origin, and the river Bann had been the boundary between them and Airgialla in this area (Geneal. Tracts 72 §112).  However, the word críonach is the most likely possibility.  Críonach appears by itself as a place-name as the site of a battle in 1086, apparently in Meath (AU).
