Slieve Croob, County Down

Origin

Ir. Sliabh Crúibe ‘mountain of the hoof’

Background

Slieve Croob (534m) stands at the point where the parishes of Dromara, Magherahamlet, Kilmegan and Drumgooland all meet and is well known as the source of the river Lagan. The name suggests an association with cattle and no doubt has mythological connotations. "The Twelve Cairns" is recorded in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs as an alternative name for the summit (OSM xii 62). There is now a single large cairn at the summit, which has excellent panoramic views due to its isolation.
