Derryneill, County Down

Origin

Ir. Doire Uí Néill ‘O'Neill's oak-wood’ or Doire Néill ‘Niall's oak-wood’

Background

Derryneill was part of the holding of Ballyward held in 1609 by Shane McEvard (CPR Jas. I 395a). The final element in this name may represent the widespread Ulster surname Ó Néill, i.e. Doire Uí Néill ‘O'Neill's oakwood’, in which genitive would have coalesced in pronunciation with the final vowel of doire ‘oakwood’.  However, it might just as easily derive from the personal name Niall giving an original Doire Néill ‘Niall's oakwood’.
