Ballyhalbert, County Down

Origin

Ir. Baile Thalbóid ‘Talbot’s townland’; earlier Eng. *Talbot(s)ton

Background

Village is on E coast of Ards Peninsula, 4km N of Portavogi

bar: Ards Upper

The parish goes by the alias name of ST ANDREWS, from a Benedictine priory founded in 1204 and named after St Andrews priory of Stogursy in Somerset, England. The priory, no trace of which now remains, was also known as BLACK ABBEY [(Ecclesia de)Talbetona 1306].

Reeves (EA 20) provides much valuable information concerning this place whose name, as he correctly points out, ‘is derived from the family of Talbot, which settled in the counties of Down and Antrim soon after the [Anglo-Norman] invasion.’  In the Inquisition held in 1334 on the death of William de Burgo, mention is made of certain lands held by ‘Johannes Talbot in Talbotyston’.  Reeves (Colton Vis.  14) states that the Talbot family ‘came from Herefordshire and settled in this country in the reign of Henry II’.  He goes on to note that the main settlements of the family were in Malahide and Belgard, near Dublin, in addition to Co. Down and S. Antrim.   Indeed, in Co. Wicklow the modern barony of Talbotstown still bears their name and it is interesting to note that the Wicklow name has retained its original Anglo-Norman form, while the Co. Down Talbotston has since been gaelicized as Ballyhalbert.  As regards the demise of the Talbot family in this area, Sav. Ards 304 cites from Spenser's View of the State of Ireland (written c. 1596) ‘Bruce rooted out the noble families of the Audlies, Talbotts ...’. The townland of Ballyhalbert contains the ruins of the medieval parish church of the parish of St. Andrews alias Ballyhalbert.
