Tullynagee, County Down

Origin

Ir. Tulaigh na Gaoithe ‘hillock of the wind’

Background

Tullynagee is well attested in the sources, being referred to from 1623, when the last letter of the spelling Balletullnegu indicates that the vowel of gaoth ‘wind’ then still had some of its original ‘high back unrounded’ quality. The alternative name Bally[c]loghan appearing in 1636, 1650, and 1662 appears to refer to Tullynagee Lough in the east of the townland: Baile an Locháin ‘townland of the lakelet’.
