Placenamesni.orgthe history behind our place-names

Ratallagh, County Down

Origin

Ir. Ráth tSaileach‘fort of the willows’

Background

O’Donovan’s suggestion of Ráth tSaileach ‘fort of the willows’ seems as likely as any other, although we might also consider *Ráth salach ‘dirty fort’.  Hogan (Onom. Goed. 577) lists both a Ráith Saileach (Fanad, Co. Donegal) and a Ráith Salach (Co. Wicklow).  The -t- sound in the name is presumably due to the -th in Ráth being delenited before the following s-. There is now no trace or record of a fort in the townland.
