Ballyfounder, County Down

Ir. Baile Phoinnir ‘Poyner’s townland’; earlier Eng. Punyertoun

Ballyfounder is another clear example of an Anglo-Norman place-name, in this case Punyertoun, which has undergone gaelicization.  We have definite instances of an Anglo-Norman family of the name Le Pugneor in Ulster, as in the following excerpt (from CDI vol. 1, no. 700): ‘Before 1216 King John granted some lands in Ulster to Sir William le Pugneor, the King’s Knight.’  More specifically to the Ards we see that in 1225 Henry III granted ‘to Brian de Scalvariis the two carucates of land in L’Ard [i.e. the Ards] which Robert le Puinnur held (ibid. no. 1287)’ (Orpen JRSAI xliv (1914) 65, n. 1). Reaney (1958, 258 s.v. Poyner, Poynor, Punyer) has examples of this surname in England, such as Geoffrey le Poinnur (Poignur) 1220 and other 13th-century forms le Poinur, le Pungneur (Puinur), Poyner etc.  These he derives from Old French poigneur ‘fighter’ and compares the surname Champion.
