Placenamesni.orgthe history behind our place-names

Dernaveagh, County Antrim

Origin

Ir. Dún na bhFiach ‘fort of the ravens’

Background

The documentary evidence suggests that the modern version of this place-name is a corruption of an earlier form Doneveagh.  The initial element of the name is therefore likely to be dún ‘fort’, rather than doire ‘oak-wood’, as suggested by most of the previous investigators.  It is interesting that the historical forms of the name of the townland of Dunnygarran in the neighbouring parish of Craigs show an opposite development, the earlier forms suggesting Irish doire and the later forms suggesting dún.  The most satisfactory interpretation of Dernaveagh is Dún na bhFiach ‘fort of the ravens’.  There were formerly two ‘enclosures’ in the townland (NISMR), but it is impossible to tell which (if any) of these is the feature which gave rise to the townland-name.
