Ardtole, County Down

Origin

Ir. Ard Tuathail  Tuathal’s height”

Background

In the south of the townland of Ardtole and about half a mile north of the town of Ardglass the ruins of the church of St Nicholas at Church Hill mark the site of a church whose name is (corruptly) recorded as Ecclesia de Droneyll [recte Ardueyll?, i.e. Ardtole] in c.1306 (Eccles. Tax. 34). The name of this church is recorded as Ardtwele alias Ardglass in 1441 (Reg. Mey (EA 36)) and Reeves (EA 36) suggests that this was originally the parish church of Ardglass.  The Gaelic personal name Tuathal is a fairly common one and is the basis of the Co. Monaghan surname Ó Tuathail ‘Toal’ (MacLysaght 1985, 287). The southern part of Ardtole is known as ‘English Ardtole’ while the northern part is known as ‘Irish Ardtole’.
