Background

Goirtín is a diminutive of the word Gort 'field' which is a field in the sense of an arable, or tilled field, and especially a field producing cereals. The element appears in Gort, Co. Galway and in its diminuitive form is anglicized to several forms; Gorteen here and in Co. Galway, Gortin in Co. Tyrone; Gurteen, Cos Galway and Sligo, while the plural Goirtíní 'little tilled fields' appears as Gorteeny, in Co. Galway (logainm.ie).
