Carry Bridge, County Fermanagh

Origin

Ir. Cora [kora] ‘causeway’ + E. bridge.

Background

11km SE of Enniskillen

par: Derrybrusk bar: Magherastephana

The hamlet of Carry Bridge is named from a bridge which connects the island of INISHMOREin Upper Lough Erne with the mainland. The bridge is named from the townland of CARRY on the island which derives from Ir. Cora ‘causeway/rocky ford’ and no doubt refers to a feature which was replaced by the bridge. The hamlet of Carry Bridge on the mainland is in the townland of AGHNACARRA which is from Ir. Achadh na Cora [aghoo na kora] ‘field of the causeway’.
