Mullaghbane, County Armagh

Origin

Ir. An Mullach Bán [an mullagh baan] ‘the white hilltop’.

Background

11km SW of Newry

par: Forkill bar: Orior Upper

The ‘hilltop’ referred to appears to be MULLAGHBANE MOUNTAIN (242m) which stands in the east of the townland, 1km south-west of Mullaghbane village. The village is not in the townland of that name: rather, it straddles the townlands of SHANROE, MAPHONER and GLEBE [Mullabane 1609].
