Ir. Lios Liath ‘grey fort’.

Background

This is a relatively transparent name made up of two common elements lios ‘ring fort’ and liath ‘grey’. Although O’Kane states that Lios Laoigh ‘fort of the calf’ ‘compares more favourably’ with the local pronunciation, the earlier historical forms point clearly to Lios Liath.
