Town is on E Antrim coast, 6km N of Carrickfergus

According to legend, Lathar was one of the twenty-five children of Úgaine Mór, a pre-Christian king of Ireland. In the early historical period Latharna was a subkingdom of Ulster and it is only in fairly recent times that the name has been used for the parish and town of Larne. The southern portion of the town is in the parish of INVER, barony of BELFAST LOWER[(i) l-Latharnu c.1160].
