Ardquin, County Down

perhaps Ir. Ard Choinn ‘Conn’s height’

Ardquin is the name of this townland and also of the parish in which it is situated. O’Donovan (OSNB), Reeves (EA 21-2, n. p), Ewart (1866: 38), Knox (Knox Hist 465) and Joyce (iii 47) all opt for Ard Chuinn ‘Con’s height/hill’, a meaning certainly supported by the modern form Ardquin although some of the early forms pose problems for such an interpretation.  Indeed the early spellings of this name can be difficult to distinguish from Ardkeen. Harris (Harris Hist. 47) suggested: ‘Ardquin, the name of this place, is a corrupted Word from Ard-Cuan, signifying a Heighth over the Lough of Strangford, formerly called Lough-Cuan, and the situation of the place corresponds herewith’. O’Laverty suggests a connection between Ardquin and St Cú Mhaighe (Saint Cooey), a form which would presumably have resembled Ard Con (from Ard Con Maighe), but again the early recorded spellings pose difficulty for this imaginative suggestion.
