Ballylenaghan, County Down

Origin

Ir. Baile Uí Leannacháin ‘(O’)Lenaghan’s townland’

Background

According to MacLysaght (1985, 193) Ó Leannacháin is the name of a Co. Roscommon sept. However, the name of this townland provides evidence that the surname was also found in Co. Down.  It is possible that Ó Leannacháin in this area is a variant of Mac Leannacháin which can be anglicised as MacLenaghan, MacClenaghan and Clenaghan and is described by Woulfe (1923, 386) as ‘an Ulster surname’.
