Ballylisbredan, County Down

Origin

Ir. Baile Lios Bradáin ‘townland of Bradán’s fort’

Background

The name of the townland of Ballylisbredan is first recorded in 1605 (Ballylissbradan, Inq. Ult. §2 Jac. I). The personal name Bradán has given rise to the surname Ó Bradáin ‘Braden, Bredin etc’ which is described by Woulfe (1923, 439) as ‘a rather scattered surname’.  The Northern Ireland Sites and Monuments Record records a possible fort in the townland.  There is also an Irish rath just inside the neighbouring townland of Ballyoran.
