Saintfield Parks, County Down

Origin

Saintfield + Eng. parks

Background

The townland of Saintfield Parks includes the crossroads around which the town grew up, and a small area to the south of it. The meaning of parks in this name is the same as in the more common Town Parks, a recurrent townland name, typically referring to the area in the centre of a town, replacing the earlier name of the townland in which the town was established. This townland is presumably a late creation, to be a ‘town parks’ area for the village settlement. South of Saintfield Parks are the two small townlands of Drumaconnell West and East, which look as if they may have been reduced in size when the village was established as such.
