Creevyloughgare, County Down

Origin

Ir. Craobhaigh Loch Gearr ‘bushy place of Loch Gearr

Background

What is now called Creevy Lough on the boundary between Creevyloughgar and Tonaghmore further west was formerly significant in the names of both of them.  This suggests that the lake may have contained a crannog dwelling, although this is not in evidence today.  The lake may have been named in early Irish Loch gCearr ‘crooked lake’, since its modern shape is still irregular, or may have been simply Loch Gearr ‘short lough’ as suggested by Luke Killen.  The commissioners of the 1623 inquisition recorded that, ‘Wee find that B.Taunaghmore and Loghgar are one and not divers, and Crevy-Loghgar to be halfe a towne belonging to Loghgar’ (Ham. Copy Inq. lv).  The inquisition confirms that Creevyloughgare was originally a half townland (Ir. leath-bhaile) by twice naming it Levalle Crevie-Loghgar, but it is a full townland in the modern system.  The references to Ballycreweh, -crevie in 1605, 1623, and to Creevy on the 1755 and 1810 counrty maps could be to Creevy Beg in Killinchy parish a few townlands to the east.
