Federnagh, County Armagh

Origin

perhaps Ir. Eadarnaidh ‘middle place/place between’

Background

The initial f- in this place name appears to be a late innovation, first appearing in 1830 which suggests that it might in fact be erroneous and not representative of the original name.

The early forms Nederny (1609, 1611, 1613), Netternagh (1661) and Neddernagh (1623) appear to indicate the plural definite article na.  The root noun in these early forms, is similar to dearna ‘palm (of hand)’ which may well appear figuratively in reference to some topological feature in a name such as Na Dearnaigh ‘the palms.

Alternatively the initial n- observed in the early historical forms might be a scribal error. In this case, the correct forms are structurally similar to the element eadarnaidh ‘middle place/place between’, which is the origin of Ederney in Co. Fermanagh (McKay 2007, 66).  The reason behind a designation such as ‘middle place’ is not readily apparent and further research would be required to confirm this form as the original name.
