Placenamesni.orgthe history behind our place-names

Lisnagree, County Armagh

Origin

Ir. Lios na Graí ‘fort of the horses’

Background

The first element in this place-name lios ‘fort’ is transparent. A circular fort is marked on the 1835 6” map (OSNI) and some definable features of the early Christian fort remain in the townland today (NISMR).

The origin of the second element is less clear. However there are a number of other townlands named Lisnagree in Cos Galway, Westmeath, Kerry and Waterford (logainm.ie). According to An Brainse Logainmneacha¸ the second element of Lisnagree is graí, which is a collective name for ‘horse’. The proposed original form for Lisnagree elsewhere, Lios na Graí is the most likely original form for the townland of Lisnagree in Co. Armagh.
