Levalleglish, County Armagh

Origin

Ir. Leathbhaile Eaglaise ‘half-townland of the church’

Background

The anglicised form eglish in Irish place-names indicates the element eagais ‘church’. This townland contains the village of Loughgall, within which there is a multiperiod (possibly early Christian) church and graveyard which remains as a densely used, walled graveyard with a ruined church at its SW corner. The main body of its fabric is C15th with alterations etc. probably of the C17th (NISMR).

The anglicised form levally indicates that this townland is considered a leathbhaile ‘half-townland’ from at least the earliest recorded form (1542c), and so the modern form is derived from Leathbhaile Eaglaise ‘half-townland of the church’.
