The village of Jonesborough in the townland of FOUGHIL OTRA was founded in 1706 by Roth Jones who was landlord of the area in the early 18th century. The parish was formed in 1760 out of the more northerly parish of BALLYMORE and six townlands from the parish of BALLYMASCANLAN in Co. Louth were added in 1861. An alias name for the village was Four Mile House while the Ir. name is Baile an Chláir [bala an chlar] ‘town of the plain’ [4 Milehouse al. Jones Borough 1714].
