Killead Parish, County

Origin

Ir. Cill Éad [kill aid].

Background

5.5km SSE of Antrim town

bar: Massereene Lower

The first element of the place-name is Ir. cill ‘church’ but the meaning of the final element is obscure. The hamlet of Killead, which contains the modern Church of Ireland church, is in the townland of SEACASH. However, the medieval parish church (of which no trace remains) was roughly 3km to the north-east in the townland of KILLEALY and close to the village named KILLEAD CORNER [Killede 1605].
