Tullaghgarley, County Antrim

Origin

Ir. Tulach Ghreallaí ‘hillock of the marsh’

Background

The townland of Tullaghgarley is known locally as ‘Tullygarley’, which suggests that the first element is an oblique form of tulach i.e. tulaigh.  However, since the majority of the historical spellings (e.g. Tullaghgarly 1640) show the spelling tullagh, it is more likely that tulach is the original form of the first element.  In the parish of Craigs, there is a townland which is also named Tullaghgarley but which has the oblique form tulaigh as its first element. The final element of Tullaghgarley is greallaí, the genitive form of greallach which is defined as ‘mire; slush, puddle; puddly ground’ (Ó Dónaill sv.); ‘a miry or marshy place’ (Joyce iii 388), and has in this case been anglicized -garley by the process of metathesis.  None of the early spellings of the place-name reflect the original Irish pronunciation of greallach, which suggests that the metathesis must have taken place before the name of the townland was first recorded.  Approximately half of the townland of Tullaghgarley lies in the parish of Ahoghill, while the other half lies in the parish of Connor. Tullaghgarley is one of approximately twelve townlands which made up the native Irish tough or territory of Keart and consisted of a portion of the parish of Connor plus all of the neighbouring parish of Ballyclug.
