Old Town Downing, County Derry

Origin

Of English origin

Background

Oldtown, formerly Bellaghy, is of English origin.  The suffix "Downing" is derived from the family of that name who settled here.  Captain Adam Downing of Bellaghy was included in the Act of Attainder passed by the Parliament called in Dublin by King James II on 7th May, 1689 (Munn's Notes 60).  One of the Downing family resided in Oldtown Downing in a house the site of which was later occupied by the residence of John Leonard (ibid.).
