Kilcronaghan Parish, County Derry

Origin

Ir. Cill Chruithneacháin [kill khrinaghine] ‘(St) Cronaghan’s church’.

Background

Hamlet is 2.5km SW of Tobermore

bar: Loughinsholin

The Cronaghan who gave name to the parish is said to have been the priest who fostered St Colmcille. Fragments of the medieval church seem to have been incorporated in an early 19th-century church, the ruins of which are in an old graveyard in the townland of MORMEAL [(go) Cill Cruineacháin c.1645].
