Dristernan and Dredolt, County Tyrone

Origin

Ir. Dristearnán ‘place of brambles’

Background

There are three Irish townlands named Dresternan, all of which derive from Dristearnán ‘place of brambles’ (dris ‘bramble’), as identified correctly previously. The same form appears as Dresternan in Co. Fermanagh (three townlands).

The second name of this townland, appearing as Dredolt is obscure. The 1661 form Derridalt might indicate that the first element is a contraction of doire.

The Esch. Co. Map forms appearing as Drettall might suggest Doire Táil ‘Tál’s oakwood’ (c.f. Carntall, Co. Antrim).

The more recent forms exhibiting -dolt might represent the past participle of the verb dol ‘loop, snare, net’ in a form such as Doire Dolta ‘oakwood of the snaring’.  The loss of final schwa (i.e. the sound of the second -a in droma) is a well-attested feature of Ulster Irish (see Ó Dochartaigh 1987, 168-72.) and would then explain the anglicisation of Doire Dolta to Dredolt.
