Edenacrannon, County Tyrone

Origin

perhaps Ir. Eadán (an) C(h)rannáin ‘brow of the wooden vessel’

Background

The element éadan literally means ‘brow’ or ‘end facing out’ and is reasonably common in place-names, especially in the northern part of the country (Flanagan & Flanagan 1994, 80). It appears without qualification in Eden in Co. Antrim. For the second element, we might compare with Tirmacrannon (Tír Mhic Críonáin ‘McCrennan’s land/country’), although the historical forms of thie current name are numerous, and contain no evidence of the surname particle mac. The most likely explanation of the second element is some derivative of crann ‘tree’, perhaps crannán ‘wooden shaft, handle’ or ‘wooden vessel’ (Ó Dónaill, s.v. crannán) or ‘handle of a scythe treel a quern-shaft’ (Dinneen, s.v. crannán).

The medial syllable represented with -a- of the contemporary form might be epenthetic, or might represent the definite article an.
