Terrenew, County Tyrone

Origin

perhaps Ir.  Tír an Fheadha ‘land of the wood’

Background

The element tír ‘country, land, territory’ appears in the names of the counties of Donegal (Tír Chonaill) and Tyrone (Tír Eoghain) but in fact can be applied to any size of land-division in Ireland from provinces to townlands (Flanagan & Flanagan 1994, 152).

The origin of the qualifying element is unclear, perhaps the personal name Aodh which was the commonest of all names in use in early Ireland, and is now everywhere anglicised Hugh (Ó Corráin & Maguire 1981, 13).

However, Tír Aodha does not adequately represent the medial syllable, appearing in the older historical forms as the component -on- which cannot be attributed to the definite article when introducing a proper noun.

Instead, perhaps the second element is a common noun as proposed in the form assigned to JOD, Tír an Fheadha ‘land of the wood’. A similar Anglicisation pattern can be seen in the name of the townland of Dunnanew (Dún an Fheadha ‘fort of the wood’) in Co. Down.
