Gortmerron, County Tyrone

Origin

Gort Mearáin ‘Mearán’s field’

Background

The first part of this name alternates in the historical references between two words, gort ‘cultivated field’ and port ‘landing-place, settlement’, here probably referring to a site on the bank of the Oona water that borders the townland < Gortmarren 1609, al. Portmaren 1621, Gortmorane 1661.  The personal name Mearán means ‘wild, spirited’ and the surname Ó Mearáin based on it was common in neighbouring Co. Monaghan.
