Tullans, County Derry

Origin

Ir. Tulán 'little hillock' + E. -s (plural)

Background

This name appears to be some derivative of tulach 'low hill, hillock, mound'. Joyce (i, 389) suggests a diminutive tulán 'little hill, a hillock', appearing as Tullen in Roscommon and Tullin near Athlone, but this form might also represent a variant plural.

The appearance of -s is probably an attempt to render the name plural using English morphology.
