Ballymullarty, County Tyrone

Origin

Ir. Baile Uí Mhuircheartaigh 'Ó Muircheartaigh's townland'

Background

The qualifying element in this name appears to be the surname Ó Muircheartaigh ‘descendant of Muircheartach' which is anglicised Moriarty. Despite the fact that it is reported to be a Kerry name (Hanks, Coates and McClure 2016, s.v. Moriarty), this name best explains the earlier historical forms of this name; Bellemurrierty (1655), Ballymoriertagh (1658). The anglicised component -mullerty does not easily correspond with any Irish surnames, and probably is a misrepresentation of the suggested form above.
