Glenavy, County Antrim

Ir. Lann Abhaigh [lan awee] ‘church of the dwarf’.

Village is 3 km S of Crumlin

bar: Massereene Upper

The E. word glen is in this case a corruption of Ir. lann ‘church’. The place-name has its origin in a legend that St Patrick built a church here and left it in charge of his disciple Daniel who was nicknamed ‘dwarf’ because of his diminutive stature. The original church site at Glenavy appears to be marked by the graveyard of the present Church of Ireland church in the village [(o) Lainn abhaich c.1450].
