Ballyregan, County Down

Origin

Ir. Baile Uí Riagáin ‘(O’)Regan’s townland’

Background

The name Ballyregan is first recorded in 1605 in a grant from King James I to James Hamilton where the name of the townland is written Balli-Regin (CPR Jas I 73a). The derivation of the place-name is clearly Baile Uí Riagáin ‘(O’)Regan’s townland’. According to Woulfe (1923, 631), Ó Riagáin is ‘the name of two distinct families, one seated in ancient Meath, the other in Thomond’ (i.e. north Munster). The Meath family were a branch of the southern Uí Néill and one of the four tribes of Tara but were dispossessed during the Norman invasion and widely dispersed so that the name is now found throughout Ireland.
