Rabbit Island, County Fermanagh

Origin

An English name

Background

This name is clearly of English origin, and the absence of any pre-18th century forms makes it impossible to know what (if any) Irish predecessor came before this name. Island in place-names does not necessarily need to refer to an island surrounded by water, particularly in East Ulster. Oileán ‘island’ in Irish place-names can refer to an area of raised land in boggy terrain (Ó Mainnín 1989-90, 200) which may well be the meaning of ‘island’ in this name.
