Placenamesni.orgthe history behind our place-names

Ederney, County Fermanagh

Origin

Ir. Eadarnaidh [adarnee] ‘middle place/place between’.

Background

The townland name from which the village derives is Ederny but the official spelling of the village has been Ederney since 1992.

The reason that Ederny should have been designated ‘middle place’ is not readily apparent and further research is required [Edernagh 1610].
