Knockmany, County Tyrone

Ir. Cnoc mBáine ‘Báine’s Hill’

This townland takes its name from the hill, which has on its summit Ania’s Cove, a megalithic tomb with some beautifully decorated stones (now covered to protect them).  This is an early name, appearing in the Annals as a landmark on the Clogher valley routeway Cnocc mBane (772). It was referred to as a fairy hill or Sídh Báine (c. 1000) and the origin of the name is explained in a legend in the DindsenchasBáine ‘whiteness’ was a supernatural being, but her place in local folklore has been taken by Áine ‘splendour’, a goddess once known all over Ireland.  TF O’Rahilly suggested that she is referred to in Legananny, a townland in Co.Down named from another megalithic tomb overlooking the Mournes (Liagán Áine ‘Áine’s little standing stone’).
