Blackwater, River, County Tyrone/Armagh

Origin

Background

Rises N of FivemiletowninCo. Tyrone. Enters Lough Neagh at Maghery in Co. Armagh.

The Ir. name of the river was An Abhainn Mhór [an owen wore] ‘the great river’, which, curiously enough, is also the Ir. name of the river BLACKWATER in Cork. An earlier Ir. name for the Blackwater was An Dabhall [an daual] ‘the water’. Part of its course forms the boundary between Cos Tyrone and Monaghan andlater between Tyrone and Armagh. Another Blackwater rises in Co. Monaghan close to Slieve Beagh and (under the name COR RIVER) joins this Blackwater 2km south of Caledon in Co Armagh [for brú Abhann Móire 1483].
