Placenamesni.orgthe history behind our place-names

Shillanmore, County Fermanagh

Origin

Ir. Sileán Mór ‘great channel’

Background

The first element of the place-name is probably Sileán, a variant of Silteán ‘small drain or channel; rivulet, rill’ (Ó Dónaill). See a similar Anglicisation in the townland name of Shillanavogy (Sileán an Bhogaigh ‘stream of the bog’) in Co. Antrim. In the current name, sileán is simply qualified by the adjective mór ‘big, great’.
