Corlacky, County Fermanagh

Ir. Corr Leacaigh “round hill of the area of flat rocks”

Corlacky lies approximately two miles south of Fivemiletown.  It is bounded on the south by the Colebrooke River and is linked to the neighbouring townland of Grogey by Pollboy Bridge.

The initial element of Corlacky is clearly corr which has a range of meanings but in this area seems most likely to signify “round hill” (see Corfannan above).  Both O’Donovan and Joyce interpret the final element of the place-name as a plural form of leac “flagstone”.  However, it is more likely to represent the genitive singular of leacach, a collective form of leac “flagstone, large flat rock, flat rocky surface” (Joyce i 416), with the significance of “place of flagstones/flat rocks” (see Cavanaleck).  The most satisfactory interpretation of Corlacky is therefore Corr Leacaigh “round hill of the area of flat rocks”.  There is an area of rocky moorland in the north-west of the townland.  In c.1834 the Ordnance Survey Name Book remarks that “half the townland is bog and mountain” (OSNB B108).
