Aughamullan, County Tyrone

Origin

Ir. Achadh Uí Mhaoláin ‘(O’)Mullan’s field’.

Background

Aughamullan north of Derryloughan lies two miles east of Coalisland and is bordered on the east by Lough Neagh. Spellings such as Aghmoylan (1609) mean that a surname cannot be proved here, and the name may be simply Achadh Maoláin 'Maolán's field'. Aughamullan contains the minor names Balletra (An Baile Íochtarach 'lower town'), Barrahavan and Derryvoorey. Barrahavan, probably Barr na hAbhann 'hill of the river' is beside the Holy River.
