Gortlenaghan and Derrykeel, County Tyrone

Origin

Ir. Doire Chaol ‘narrow woodland’ and perhaps Ir. Gort Uí Leannacháin ‘(O’)Lenaghan’s field’ or Gort Leanacháin ‘field of the wet land'

Background

The first name of this townland, Derrykeel, clearly originates from Doire Chaol ‘narrow woodland’. The second name, Gortlenaghan is absent from the list of historical forms, although we can suggest either Gort Uí Leannacháin ‘(O’)Lenaghan’s field’ or Gort Leanacháin ‘field of the wet land’ as possible original forms.
