Tullyallen, County Tyrone

Origin

perhaps Ir. Tulaigh Álainn ‘beautiful hill’

Background

One possibility for the origin of this name is Tulaigh Almháin 'Almháin's hillock' featuring the personal name Almu (later Almhain), as in the Hill of Allen, which is one proposal for Tullyelmer in Armagh (NIPNP notes). Almu / Almha is a lady of the mythical Tuatha Dé Danann of early Irish literature and pseudo-history who gave her name to the Hill of Allen (Ó Corráin & Maguire 1990: 21) and it is possible that she is similarly associated with other places (Ó Máinnín 2002, 134).
We should also consider Tulaigh Álainn are four townlands named Tullyallen, the others appear in Cos Armagh, Monaghan and Louth (logainm.ie). Given its appearance elsewhere, we will consider this the most likely origin of this name.

References to Killneman (1618), Killaman (1661) etc. probably refer to the Co. Tyrone parish of Killyman (Cill na mBan ‘church of the women’).
